The Korea National University of Arts (President Daejin Kim, hereinafter referred to as K-Arts) is accelerating its collaborative efforts with KAIST (President Kwanghyung Lee).

K-Arts announced on the 17th that it successfully concluded the 'K-Arts x KAIST Freshman Video Camp (hereinafter referred to as the Video Camp),' the first program implemented following the mutual exchange business agreement signed with KAIST in January this year.

This video camp, organized to expand the mutual exchange between students of both institutions and the collaborative integration of art and technology, took place at the Korea National University of Arts' School of Film, TV & Multimedia for eight days starting from the 14th of last month.

A total of 34 freshmen from the 2022 academic year, selected from each school, were divided into 11 teams, including five video teams and six game teams. They attended lectures on theories such as shooting, editing, sound, computer graphics, storytelling, directing, and planning, as well as technical lectures on handling shooting cameras, editing equipment, sound, and game tools. Based on the 49-hour lecture program, they created short films and simple games, enhancing their understanding and creativity in convergent arts and advanced content. This also provided an opportunity to experience collaborative creation involving members from both science and art fields before their enrollment.

In a survey conducted after the event, 97% of the participants (78.8% strongly agree, 18.2% agree) rated the theoretical and technical knowledge provided at the camp very positively, and all of them (90.9% strongly agree, 9.1% agree) expressed their willingness to recommend the video camp to others.

Jaewoong Jeong, a freshman at KAIST, expressed his feelings about the experience: 'It was an impressive experience to briefly overlap my life with those of friends who have lived different lives. It seems like it will serve as a good inspiration for many other things I will do in the future.'

Additionally, Yeonsu Shin, a student at the Korea National University of Arts' School of Film, TV & Multimedia, shared, 'Since K-Arts and KAIST are schools where students are preparing their own distinct paths, it's easy to get buried in the direction one has set for themselves. This video camp has been an opportunity to break out of my thought patterns and gain a broader perspective.'

Byeongha Shin, the Dean of Student Affairs at KAIST, stated, 'For KAIST to take another step forward as a first-class university, it is necessary not just to focus on science and technology, but also to cultivate humanities and artistic sensibilities, and to make efforts to combine these two fields.' He revealed plans to further diversify the scope of exchange activities with K-Arts, beyond just this video camp.

Sngmoo Lee, the Director of the Art & Technology Lab at the Korea National University of Arts, who oversaw this video camp, evaluated its significance by saying, 'Through this camp, we were able to see the birth of true convergence as people from different fields shared and enjoyed their spontaneous visions together.'

Based on the success of this video camp, the two schools plan to hold the video camp annually for incoming freshmen and are expected to initiate programs for current students as early as the first half of this year.
