Toward the Convergence of Art and Science

K-Arts-KAIST Freshmen Meet for the Second Time

- K-Arts-KAIST to host '2023 K-ARTS X KAIST Freshman Video Camp'

- Last year's event was a huge success with 100% of freshmen recommending it to their peers.

- Lectures will be broadcast live so that freshmen who cannot participate in person can attend the camp.

- Held from February 13th (Mon) to February 20th (Mon) at the K-Arts Seokgwan Campus School of Film, TV & Multimedia

The K-ARTS X KAIST Freshman Video Camp, which brings together incoming students from Korea's leading arts and science universities to experience the convergence of art and science, will be held once again this year ahead of the start of the 2023 academic year.

The freshman video camp was held on Jan. 6, 2022, as part of a collaboration between the two schools.

The program was held for the first time last year based on the signing of a business agreement between the two schools on January 6, 2022, to support the expansion of cooperation in the convergence of culture, arts, and technology, and received a satisfaction rating of "100% willingness to recommend to new students.

Korea National University of Arts (President Daejin Kim, hereinafter referred to as K-Arts), together with KAIST, will host the "2023 K-ARTS X KAIST Freshman Video Camp" from Monday, February 13th to Monday, February 20th at the Seokgwan Campus School of Film, TV & Multimedia.

A total of 36 freshmen students from KAIST and K-Arts will participate in the camp, which aims to promote media literacy and creativity in convergence art and high-tech content collaboration through creative lectures and team-based workshops for video and game production.

In particular, this year, we will be livestreaming lectures for a select number of practical classes, in response to feedback from new students who are unable to attend in person.

"With the development of advanced contents such as metaverse and virtual reality, the convergence of art, science, and technology is becoming more important than ever, but there is a lack of creative exchange between the talents underlying them," said Sngmoo Lee, director of K-Arts Art & Technology Lab (professor of Department of Filmmaking in School of Film, TV & Multimedia), who planned and organized the event. "Through team work to plan and produce video works and games together, we hope to provide a place for voluntary and creative exchange between art and science talents," he said.

The K-Arts Art & Technology Lab is a creation and production lab that aims to converge science and technology with cultural arts, industry, and education, and its works, such as the Jungian virtual reality works <Scarecrow> and <Rain Fruits,> have been invited to the world's leading high-tech film festivals such as Sundance Film Festival, South by Southwest (SXSW), Tribeca, and Cannes Film Festival XR, and have won a number of major awards, while collaborating with leading domestic and foreign companies and research institutes such as LG U+, SKT, and TikTok to lead global trends in realistic media, advanced medical care, and artificial intelligence content. In 2021, he was selected as a 'Leading Graduate School for Culture and Technology' by the Korea Creative Content Agency, and is working with Pohang University of Technology to build a content metaverse utilizing artificial intelligence and augmented reality.
