Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts, President Daejin Kim) will collaborate with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the world's No. 1 research university in the United States, on a cutting-edge convergence project.

On Thursday, July 13, VCU Vice President Fotis Sotiropoulos visited K-Arts School of Film, TV & Multimedia to encourage VCU computer science students who came to Korea for a preliminary workshop on a joint project with VCU College of Fine Arts and to experience first-hand the state-of-the-art convergence education. He also signed an exchange agreement between the two universities for this joint project.

Through this exchange agreement, students in the industry-academia project class of K-Arts Chungyean Cho (Professor of Department Multimedia), who is leading convergence art using high-tech, and art and engineering students of VCU Virtual Kinect Imaging major Professor Semi Ryu (a graduate of the first class of the School of Film, TV & Multimedia) will jointly promote high-tech convergence projects.

The project, which will begin in the second semester of '23, will explore the form of interactive storytelling and the language of new media performance through XR performance based on the Metaverse platform as a convergence research for high-tech realistic content. The joint class will be conducted remotely in collaboration with K-Arts AT Lab, and will be operated independently and experimentally through thematic teamwork. The program is expected to expand to include collaborations with the Department of Design at School of Visual Arts and VCU College of Art and Design in the future, paving the way for more international and active exchange programs.

Daejin Kim, President of K-Arts, said, "This joint project between K-Arts and VCU is more meaningful as an opportunity for K-arts to actively realize the artistic values that the world needs in the era of AI and VR as a frontier. We look forward to creating the future of convergence art that the world will recognize and follow.“

VCU is ranked #1 in fine and performing arts among U.S. state research universities (according to U.S. News & World Report), ranked #1 in studio art (sculpture), #2 in studio art (printmaking), #3 in studio art (glass), #4 in studio art (graphic design), #5 in visual-based new media arts, and #12 in studio art (painting).
