The Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts), under President Kim Daejin, successfully concluded the 2024 Freshman Video and Game Camp in collaboration with KAIST (President Lee Kwanghyung).
This camp, designed to enhance student exchange and collaboration between the two institutions, took place from February 14 to 19 at K-Arts' Seokgwan Campus. It is the third program launched since the signing of the mutual exchange agreement with KAIST in January 2022.
A total of 33 incoming students, selected from both universities, were divided into eight teams—five for video projects and three for game development. They attended theoretical lectures on shooting, editing, sound design, computer graphics, storytelling, directing, and planning, as well as technical sessions using filming cameras, editing equipment, audio tools, and game development software.
Over the course of four nights and five days, the students created short films and Unity-based and board games, enhancing their understanding and creativity in the fields of convergence art and advanced content. This experience provided a unique opportunity for participants from both science and arts backgrounds to engage in collaborative creation prior to their official admission.
According to a post-event survey, 100% of participants expressed their willingness to recommend the video camp to future freshmen (84.6% strongly agree, 15.4% agree), and 96% rated the theoretical and technical knowledge provided during the camp positively (73.1% strongly agree, 23.1% agree).
Song Hyunseo, a KAIST freshman, shared, “Every moment of the camp felt like a dream. I found out about the camp through an email after entering KAIST, and working alongside wonderful people while passionately creating projects was truly meaningful. Though the camp has ended, I hope we can continue to share experiences and grow together, extending the dreams we discussed during the camp into reality.”
Park Soyoon, a K-Arts dance student, expressed, “I have only focused on my field of art since I was young, so it was an honor to meet new people and learn from excellent teachers about different fields through this camp. I aspire to be an artist who can showcase multiple colors by studying various disciplines, not just my major.”
Lee Soojin, the KAIST student affairs director, commented, “It is wonderful to see that the third Video and Game Camp, following last year's success, concluded with high satisfaction among participants. I hope that exchanges between the two schools will continue beyond just the video and game camp and lead to more creative and challenging initiatives that combine KAIST’s strengths in science and technology with K-Arts’ strengths in the arts.”
Lee Sngmoo, director of K-Arts' Art and Technology Lab, remarked, “The process of discovering similarities and differences while working towards a common goal has allowed students from the arts and sciences to explore the potential for collaboration. We will strive to make this program a benchmark for convergence education based on the experiences of the past three years and discussions with staff from both schools.”
Both institutions plan to continue enhancing the camp based on this year’s experiences, with the goal of holding an enriching annual program for new students.
